Modern engines fitted with exhaust gas recirculation systems (EGR) can lead to problems. A portion of exhaust gas is routed back into the engine, and oil from the crankcase ventilation system collects the exhaust particles. This combination of oil and exhaust particles from the EGR can build up, blocking the inlet manifolds and valves, leading to reduced engine performance and possible engine failure.
